One of the coolest features of HAVEN each year are the hands-on DIY sessions that are scheduled throughout the conference. In these sessions, fellow attendees come together and participate in fun projects provided by some of our sponsors.

Here’s a look at the hands-on DIY sessions that were featured at HAVEN 2019.

Lizzy Luder | Jamie Costiglio | DEWALT | Learning Scroll Saw Skills

Hands-On DIY

The House of Timber’s Lizzy Luder and maker extraordinaire Jaime Costiglio gave tips and hands-on attendees lessons on how to use the scroll saw. Scroll saws are used to make intricate cuts and curves, and folks were able to try out their skills on various leaf-shaped objects made out of wood.

Lindsey McCord | Arrow Fastener Upholstery Workshop

Hands-On DIY

Lindsey, a.k.a. Lindsey Crafter, led an interactive session that first walked the audience through the reconstruction of a dining room chair using weaving and basic upholstery techniques. She then taught attendees how to create a linen-upholstered memo board. This was a great project that appealed to everyone in the audience and was easy enough for beginners to accomplish in a short period of time.

The first 50 attendees were even able to take home the Arrow Fastener tools that they worked with!

Jennifer Ferguson | Artistic Painting Studio

Hands-On DIY

In this session, Jennifer introduced Haven attendees to her rollers and foils and showed them different applications for using both of these amazing products. She taught them how to use her Stamping Roller with Paint and Foil Adhesive so they could learn multiple application processes. This also allowed Jennifer to show them how the foils worked and could also be incorporated with the Rollers. In addition, Jennifer introduced attendees to her line of Fauxy Rollers which create an impression into a wet material.

Attendees got their hands dirty and had fun playing with the different products! They each received a Stamping Roller, Foils (they got to choose a couple of different patterns), and Foil Adhesive to make sure they could create immediately with what they learned in class.

Jess Crow | Total Boat | Epoxy Geodes

Hands-On DIY

The Total Boat HAVEN session was a blast! Jess’ main goal was to elevate some of the fear associated with resin epoxy, and shatter some myths that it is only for “River Tables” or finishing artwork.

During the session she and the mavens were able to create captivating geodesic jewelry cups, bangles for their wrists, as well as coasters. Jess says that seeing everyone relax once they did their first pour was extremely rewarding! Some reasons given for not trying resin were: “scary” “expensive” “unforgiving” “…just not into making a River Table” and many more.

Says Jess: “Being available in a hands-on situation to encourage other makers, and see them succeed in an area they were a little gun shy about is a great feeling, but seeing them demold their creations and be downright giddy over what they had created was outstanding.”

Lindi and Russel Vanderschaaf | Making With Metal

Hands-On DIY

In the Making with Metal class, attendees experimented with a new medium for many people: copper pipe. Lindi and Russel shared inspiration photos and gave attendees the opportunity to learn new skills themselves, such as cutting, attaching, and planning copper pipe projects. They wanted to inspire people to try working with new materials, and to break out of the mould, by making ideas come to life by using a new medium.

Attendees made copper pipe candlesticks (and a couple of other creative copper pipe projects) and they had a great time together! Many of the attendees had never tried cutting or gluing copper before and many of them said that their heads were swimming with new ideas after the session.

Amy Howard | Glass Etching

Hands-On DIY

The amazing Amy Howard gave her class an opportunity to etch various designs onto glass, and they did an awesome job!
